Bhubaneswar: The Odia film industry is set to achieve a historic milestone with the release of ‘Mahaprabhu Jagannath’, the first-ever animated feature film in the 80-year history of Odia cinema.
The spiritual animation is scheduled for a worldwide release on July 17 in Odia, Hindi and Telugu, marking a proud moment for Odisha and its cinematic legacy.
Interestingly, the journey of Odia cinema began nearly eight decades ago with ‘Sita Bibaha’, the first Odia talkie based on the life of Lord Rama. Continuing that tradition of devotional storytelling, Mahaprabhu Jagannath brings the divine legacy of Lord Jagannath to the big screen through modern animation technology.
The film carries a simple yet profound message—that in the present age of Kaliyuga, devotion (Bhakti) is the only path to attaining the blessings of Lord Jagannath.
Designed especially to connect with today’s younger generation, who are increasingly immersed in the digital world of mobile phones and the internet, the film uses animation as a powerful medium to introduce children and families to Jagannath culture and timeless spiritual values.
According to the makers, the primary objective of the film is not only to entertain but also to inspire moral values, foster good character, and awaken devotion among audiences through engaging animated storytelling.
Speaking about the project, Durga Prasad Dalai, Director of Eli Animation and producer of Mahaprabhu Jagannath, said the film is a sincere effort to showcase the boundless glory of Lord Jagannath and promote Jagannath culture on a global platform.
“Our aim is to take the rich heritage of Jagannath culture to every household—not just across India but around the world—through the medium of animation. Releasing the film during the sacred Rath Yatra season makes it a special gift for every Odia family,” Dalai said.
With its unique blend of spirituality, technology and cultural heritage, Mahaprabhu Jagannath is expected to become a landmark production for the Odia film industry, opening a new chapter in regional animation filmmaking while introducing the timeless message of devotion to audiences across generations.
