From Ph.D. Scholar to State Award-Winning Actress: Samarpita Dash’s Inspiring Debut on the Silver Screen
Bhubaneswar: For many aspiring actors, the journey to recognition is often measured in years of auditions, countless roles, and relentless perseverance. For Samarpita Dash, however, the spotlight arrived with her very first feature film.

The Ph.D. scholar from the KIIT School of Mass Communication has been honoured with the Best Actress (Jury) Award at the Odisha State Film Awards for her debut performance in Ae Akasha Tale—an achievement that has brought together two seemingly different worlds: academic research and cinema.
The award, presented by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi during the State Film Awards ceremony, marks a defining moment not only in Samarpita’s acting career but also in the growing recognition of young artists who seamlessly blend scholarship, creativity, and cultural storytelling.

What makes the achievement even more remarkable is that Ae Akasha Tale was her first feature film. While many actors spend years waiting for such recognition, Samarpita’s debut performance struck a chord with audiences and the jury alike, establishing her as one of the promising new faces in Odia cinema.

Produced by Story Lab Creative Media, Ae Akasha Tale is much more than a family drama. The film explores the emotional relationship between a daughter, her father, and the land they call home. Through themes of entrepreneurship, rural development, agro-tourism, and self-discovery, the film presents Odisha not merely as a backdrop but as a living, breathing character. Its message has gained added significance as the state government actively promotes rural homestays and community-based tourism, making the film’s vision both timely and relevant.

For Samarpita, acting is only one facet of a multidimensional career. As a Ph.D. scholar at KIIT School of Mass Communication, she continues to pursue academic research while actively contributing to the creative industry. Her work reflects a rare balance between intellectual inquiry and artistic expression, proving that cinema and academia can complement rather than compete with each other.
Long before her film debut, Samarpita had already earned recognition on the stage. With nearly six years of theatre experience, she has performed in acclaimed productions including Sita, Samudra re Rajhansi, City@75, Devi, Park, Kamala, and Anamika Tara.
Theatre, she believes, shaped her understanding of character, emotion, and storytelling, laying the foundation for her transition to cinema.

Her creative pursuits extend beyond acting. Samarpita is a core member of Story Lab Creative Media’s Research and Quality Division, where she contributes to developing meaningful narratives. She is also the founder of PIJULI, an Indian bag brand inspired by cultural heritage and traditional aesthetics, reflecting her passion for preserving local identity through entrepreneurship.
The recognition at the Odisha State Film Awards celebrates more than an individual performance. It symbolises the emergence of a new generation of storytellers who are equally comfortable in research laboratories, theatre halls, and film sets. In Samarpita Dash, Odisha has found an artist who represents the convergence of education, culture, innovation, and cinematic excellence.
As Ae Akasha Tale continues to connect with audiences for its authentic portrayal of Odisha’s people and traditions, Samarpita’s award-winning debut stands as a reminder that meaningful stories, rooted in local culture yet universal in emotion, continue to leave a lasting impact.
Her journey from researcher to acclaimed actress is not just a personal milestone—it is an inspiring story of passion, perseverance, and the limitless possibilities that emerge when knowledge meets creativity.
