Bhubaneswar: Acclaimed Odia filmmaker Snehasis Das known for his remarkable works such as Kokoli: Fish Out of Water, Sukha Bhai ra Sholay, and Naali Cha, is set to release his upcoming feature-length documentary film on the life and legacy of eminent playback singer Md Sikandar Alam.

The documentary, directed by Das and presented by the Md Sikandar Alam Foundation, will premiere soon on the Naked Eye YouTube channel.

Md Sikandar Alam (27 July 1939 – 8 August 2010) was one of the most celebrated playback singers in the Odia film industry, popularly known as Ollywood. Often referred to as the “Salabega of modern Odisha”, Alam’s melodious voice left a lasting imprint on Odia cinema and music.

Born in Routrapur, Baialishi Mouzaa of Cuttack district, Alam moved to Cuttack with his family, where he completed his schooling at Christ Collegiate School and later pursued his studies at Stewart College. His passion for music led him to the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, where he trained in Hindustani classical vocals, followed by Odissi music under the tutelage of the legendary Pt Balakrushna Dash.

Alam began his musical journey with All India Radio in 1957 and made his cinematic debut in the film Laxmi (1964), directed by Balakrushna Dash. Over the years, he lent his voice to nearly 50 Odia films, including classics like Amada Bata, Adina Megha, Manika Jodi, Mamata, Suryamukhi, and Puja. With more than 2,000 recorded songs, he carved a place of reverence in Odia music history.

He also collaborated on the music album Ala ke Huzur with his wife and daughter, showcasing the family’s musical legacy. Notably, Alam was the first Odia singer to be heard on BBC London, marking a significant milestone in his career.

A revered cultural icon, Sikandar Alam performed widely across India and abroad before his demise on 8 August 2010 at the age of 71, following a prolonged illness.

The upcoming documentary is expected to not only chronicle Alam’s artistic journey but also serve as a tribute to his invaluable contribution to Odia music and culture.
