Bhubaneswar: The critically acclaimed Odia feature film Lahari, directed by Amartya Bhattacharyya and produced by Jhilik Bhattacharjee under her banner Jhilik Motion Pictures, has been officially selected for the 11th edition of the Mosaic International South Asian Film Festival (MISAFF) — Canada’s premier celebration of contemporary South Asian cinema.
The film will have its Canadian premiere on November 30 (Sunday) at 4:45 PM at the Living Arts Center in Mississauga, Ontario, marking another proud moment for Odia cinema on the global stage.
A Poetic Journey Through Life and Change
Written, directed, and shot by Amartya Bhattacharyya, Lahari is a poignant exploration of human emotions, generational shifts, and the clash between tradition and modernity. Set in a serene village in rural Odisha, the story revolves around Dinu, an elderly fisherman, and his friend Bhuta, who builds a new eco-resort in the village. When Dinu’s young son Naba expresses a desire for a doll as his birthday gift, it challenges traditional gender roles and triggers a sequence of events that reshapes their lives forever.
The narrative, rich with symbolism and visual poetry, mirrors the meaning of its title — Lahari, which translates to “wave” — representing the continuous flow of human emotions, societal change, and the rhythm of nature.
The film stars Bikash Das, Jayaprakash Das, Dipanwit Dashmohapatra, Smruti Ranjan Mahala, and Babushaan Mohanty in key roles, with music composed by Kisaloy Roy.
A New Wave in Odia Cinema
Produced by Jhilik Motion Pictures, Lahari reflects Jhilik Bhattacharjee’s ongoing mission to promote meaningful, content-driven Odia cinema with global appeal. The production house, founded by the popular actress-turned-producer, has consistently supported bold and artistic storytelling that connects Odisha’s cultural roots with universal human experiences.
“Lahari is very close to our hearts,” said Jhilik Bhattacharjee. “Its selection at MISAFF is a matter of great pride, not just for our team but for the entire Odia film industry. We believe stories from Odisha deserve to travel the world, and this recognition reaffirms that belief.”
Recognition Across the Globe
Before its Canadian premiere, Lahari premiered theatrically across Odisha on September 12, 2025, earning praise for its soulful storytelling and stunning cinematography. The film has already been screened at several prestigious international festivals, including the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2025 and the 20th Tasveer South Asian Film Festival in Seattle, USA.
The selection at MISAFF adds to Lahari’s growing list of global accolades, highlighting the expanding reach of Odia cinema on international platforms.
As Lahari readies for its Canadian premiere at MISAFF, it continues to symbolize a rising wave in Indian regional cinema — one where local stories, rooted in authenticity, are resonating with audiences around the world.
