Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s celebrated vocalist and playback singer Pranab Patnaik, whose mellifluous voice remained an integral part of Odia music and cinema for over six decades, passed away at his Bhubaneswar residence on Friday. He was 88.
His death has triggered an outpouring of grief across Odisha’s cultural and music fraternity, bringing to an end the journey of one of the most recognisable voices of Odia music.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi condoled Patnaik’s demise and described it as an irreparable loss to Odisha’s art and cultural heritage. He said Patnaik had enchanted generations of Odias with his soul-stirring voice and timeless compositions.
“The enchanting melody of his mellifluous voice and his timeless compositions will forever remain immortal in the hearts of every Odia,” the Chief Minister said, while extending condolences to the bereaved family and the singer’s countless admirers. He also prayed to Lord Jagannath for eternal peace of the departed soul.
Born on January 20, 1938, Patnaik was introduced to music at an early age and received formal training under noted music guru Kunal Adinarayan. He entered the Odia film industry as a playback singer with the 1958 film ‘Maa’.
Over a career spanning more than 60 years, Patnaik lent his voice to over 200 Odia films, becoming one of the defining playback singers of the industry’s golden era. His distinctive singing style and command over melody helped him carve out a unique place in the hearts of music lovers.
His musical repertoire, however, went far beyond playback singing. He rendered Odissi, folk, devotional, semi-classical and traditional music, besides Hindi songs and ghazals. He also shared the stage with several renowned singers, including Usha Mangeshkar, Bhupinder Singh, Hemlata and Vani Jairam.
Patnaik collaborated with some of Odisha’s most respected composers and musicians, including Akshaya Mohanty, Shantanu Mahapatra, Balakrishna Das and Prafulla Kar. His voice became closely associated with many memorable compositions that continue to evoke nostalgia among generations of listeners.
In recognition of his contribution to music and cinema, Patnaik received several prestigious honours, including the Jayadeva Award, Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and State Film Award.
For generations of Odias, Patnaik’s voice represented an era when melody and lyrical depth dominated the state’s musical landscape. His songs not only enriched Odia cinema but also became part of the cultural memory of the state.
With his passing, Odisha has lost a towering figure of its musical tradition. Yet, through hundreds of songs and recordings, Pranab Patnaik’s voice is likely to continue living on in the hearts of music lovers for generations to come.
