Bhubaneswar: The official trailer of the upcoming Odia film Kanda Mastre was released on Tuesday, offering a moving glimpse into a fading cultural tradition of Odisha while building anticipation among cinema lovers.
Directed and produced by Biswajit Panda, the film is rooted in the traditional “Kandana” ritual — an emotional wedding custom where brides expressed their feelings through poetic wailing during the bidayi ceremony. Once a deeply symbolic practice in Odia weddings, the ritual has gradually disappeared since the 1990s.
Through Kanda Mastre, the makers attempt to revisit and preserve this vanishing cultural expression.
The trailer presents an emotionally charged narrative, blending nostalgia with social commentary. It highlights the delicate interplay between tradition and modernity, while portraying the inner turmoil and strength of women at a crucial turning point in their lives. Rich visuals, intense performances and heartfelt dialogues suggest that the film will strike a deep emotional chord with audiences.
The film stars Bibhu Prasad, Lipsa Mishra, Pruthvi Raj Nayak, Swetashree Padhy, Dharitri Khandual and Sara Apa in key roles. Lipsa Mishra also serves as the Associate Producer of the project.
The story and dialogues have been written by Zakir Khan, who has co-written the screenplay along with Biswajit Panda. The film is produced under the banner of Biswajit Itishree Cinema, with music rights acquired by Amara Muzik.
The background score, as evident in the trailer, blends folk elements with contemporary tones, enhancing the emotional weight of the narrative.
With its culturally rich theme and emotionally resonant storyline, Kanda Mastre is poised to offer a meaningful cinematic experience. The release date is expected to be announced soon.
