The Significance of Sabitri Amavasya

Observed by married Hindu women across Odisha, Sabitri Amavasya commemorates Savitri’s devotion to her husband Satyavan. According to legend, Savitri’s steadfast love and determination even moved Yama, the god of death, to restore her husband’s life.

Women begin the day with a purifying bath and adorn themselves in new clothes and bangles. They apply vermilion (sindoor) on their foreheads and visit temples, offering *bhoga* (fruits and foods) and listening to the sacred tale of Savitri and Satyavan.

As part of the tradition, women fast from dawn to dusk, praying under **banyan trees**, which symbolize strength and longevity in marriage. The ritual of tying sacred threads (*raksha sutra*) around the tree represents the enduring bond between husband and wife.
