When the mist rolls down the emerald hills of Koraput and a flute’s tune drifts through the air, Odisha’s heart speaks — softly, sincerely. It is this heartbeat that Maliput Melodies, directed by Vishal Patnaik and produced by Kaushik Das, captures with grace and authenticity.

The Odia-language feature has struck a new chord for regional cinema, earning its place in the Indian Panorama section at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI). Produced under the banner of Kaustav DreamWorks Studios, Maliput Melodies stands as both a visual poem and a cultural milestone — a reminder that the simplest stories, told truthfully, can echo far beyond their origins.

Notably, Maliput Melodies is the only Odia film selected in the Indian Panorama Feature Film section at IFFI 2025, marking a proud moment for Odisha’s film fraternity.

Maliput Melodies is not one story — it is four. An anthology of life in rural Odisha, it tells intertwined tales that explore dreams, disruptions, and the fragile rhythm of survival.

Each chapter unfolds like a melody, yet all are bound by the same human heartbeat:

“Kanaphula” follows two friends who sell flutes and toys, saving to buy golden earrings for their daughters during Rath Yatra — dreams dashed when the festival is cancelled amid a pandemic scare.

“Rangamati” portrays two brothers divided by ambition — one staying rooted in the village, the other chasing a future in Bangalore.

“Baidakaria” captures the quiet agony of a traditional village band waiting endlessly for a call to perform during Dussehra.

“Bhibhaghar” unfolds around a middle-class family preparing for a wedding, balancing joy with unspoken anxiety.

Each tale becomes a mirror to the other — a mosaic of small joys and sudden heartbreaks, where life’s beauty and vulnerability dance in perfect rhythm.

Director Vishal Patnaik, hailing from Jeypore, transforms his artistic eye into cinematic poetry. A fine-arts graduate and former art teacher, Patnaik brings the sensibility of a painter to the moving image. His camera lingers on the dust rising from a village road, the glow of evening lamps, the sound of silence between two breaths.

“I wanted to show how even silence has sound in villages like ours,” he says — a thought that echoes throughout the film.

Every frame feels hand-painted: delicate, patient, steeped in empathy. The result is cinema that observes rather than performs, allowing emotions to bloom naturally.

Shot across the serene tribal belts of southern Odisha, Maliput Melodies captures a world rarely seen on screen — terracotta homes, red soil, flutes carved from bamboo, the hush before a festival.

While rooted in Odia culture, its themes — migration, resilience, the clash of old and new — are universal. The film reminds us that the simplest lives often hold the deepest truths.

Behind this lyrical creation stands Kaustav DreamWorks Studios, a production house known for nurturing fresh cinematic voices and authentic regional narratives. Its mission is clear — to tell stories that preserve cultural identity while meeting global standards of craft.

By supporting Maliput Melodies, the studio reinforces its belief that meaningful, content-driven films from Odisha can compete on any stage.

The selection of Maliput Melodies in the Indian Panorama section at IFFI 2025 is more than a festival honor — it’s a triumph for the Odia film fraternity. Few Odia films have reached this platform, and this recognition highlights the growing power of regional cinema in India’s storytelling landscape.

With films like Papa Buka and Maliput Melodies sharing the spotlight at this year’s IFFI, Odisha’s cinematic voice is resonating louder than ever.

At a time when the mainstream often chases spectacle, Maliput Melodies stands as a testament to sincerity — a film that listens, rather than shouts. Its unhurried pace and heartfelt tone embody a quiet revolution, proving that the soul of cinema lies not in budget or glamour, but in truth and tenderness.

Ultimately, Maliput Melodies is not just a film — it’s a feeling.
It’s the sound of a flute across a valley, a mother’s prayer, a band’s waiting silence.
It’s the rhythm of life in Odisha — tender, resilient, eternal.

Kaustav DreamWorks Studios has emerged as a torchbearer of Odisha’s new cinematic movement — a platform where artistry meets purpose. The studio focuses on films that highlight regional identity, social change, and the everyday beauty of Odia life.

At its helm is Kaushik Das, the producer of Maliput Melodies and the founder of AAO NXT, Odisha’s first home-grown OTT streaming platform.

Through AAO NXT, Das has revolutionized how Odia content reaches audiences, giving filmmakers a digital stage to showcase their creativity. His dual role as producer and entrepreneur bridges tradition and technology — empowering regional stories to find both artistic acclaim and contemporary relevance.

With Maliput Melodies, Kaushik Das and Kaustav DreamWorks Studios reaffirm that Odisha’s cinema doesn’t just have stories worth telling — it has melodies the world deserves to hear.
