Bhubaneswar: In a major step towards revitalizing the Odia film industry, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday visited the iconic Kalinga Studio and directed officials to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for its complete modernization and transformation into a state-of-the-art, self-sufficient film production hub.

Established in 1980, Kalinga Studio once held the distinction of being the most well-equipped film studio in Eastern India. However, decades of neglect and outdated infrastructure led to its decline. With the rise of new-age filmmaking and competition from other regions, the Odia film industry has long been in need of a dedicated space with modern resources and world-class facilities.

Recognizing this gap, the Chief Minister has made the development of Kalinga Studio a top priority for his government. “The growth of the Odia film industry depends on modern infrastructure. Kalinga Studio will be the nucleus of that growth,” Majhi said during his visit.

He stressed that the revamped studio would not only serve as a creative space for filmmakers but also generate employment and boost the state’s cultural economy.
Under the first phase of the studio’s transformation—already underway through IDCO—several key facilities have been developed, including a Tech Building, Entrance Plaza, Indoor Shooting Floors, ‘Kalinga Movie Magic’ theme zone, Avenue Land, and a Village Area set. Additional features such as Snow World, Community Hall, Bamboo Structures, Green Zones, and a Water Body have also been created to support diverse filming needs.

The Chief Minister instructed officials to expedite the completion of the remaining works and emphasized the importance of including all modern technical amenities in the final plan. He also announced that consultations will be held with producers, directors, and other film industry stakeholders to ensure the studio meets real industry needs.

Accompanying the Chief Minister was Industries and Skill Development Minister Sampad Charan Swain, and several films stars including Sritam Das Harihara Mohapatra and others who toured the site and reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening Odisha’s film infrastructure and talent ecosystem.

This initiative marks a significant turning point for the Odia film industry, with the potential to restore its former glory and propel it into the mainstream of Indian cinema.
