Kolkata: The biographical film ‘SHYAMA’, based on the life and legacy of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, has entered the filming stage, with its makers promising further announcements about the project in the coming days.

The film was announced on July 6, 2026, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Dr Mookerjee, by actor, writer and director Suchandra X Vaaniya. The latest update, marked ‘FILMING NOW’, signals the next phase of the project.
Directed by Suchandra X Vaaniya and Chaandroday Pal, the film aims to bring the life, political philosophy and historical significance of Dr Mookerjee to the big screen, particularly for younger audiences.
Former West Bengal Governor Tathagata Roy has contributed to the film’s research and screenplay development. Having studied Dr Mookerjee’s life, political ideology and historical role over several years, Roy’s research is expected to lend historical depth to the narrative.
BJP MLA Tarunjyoti Tewari is also assisting the project with historical documentation, source materials and legal research to ensure a well-documented portrayal of the political leader.
Suchandra X Vaaniya, who has worked across acting, writing and filmmaking, received the Best Female Debut Director award at the Montreal Independent Film Festival in 2021. Her notable works include the docu-feature ‘Ramayana: The Arrival of Suparnakha’, which revisits the epic from the perspective of Suparnakha.
She has also authored the Bengali novel ‘Ekanno Narir Ek Ramayan’, exploring the lesser-known stories of 51 women associated with the Ramayana.
With ‘SHYAMA’, the filmmaker is turning her attention to a significant chapter of India’s political history. The makers are expected to reveal more details about the film, including other aspects of its production, in the coming days.
