Bhubaneswar: In an industry where glamour often demands full-time commitment, actress and performer Payal Routray has carved out a unique identity by successfully balancing a demanding IT career with a flourishing journey in entertainment.

The Bhubaneswar-born performer has become one of Odisha’s most recognisable faces in music videos and film songs. Her latest appearance in the chartbuster item number “Anugul Ra Tukuli” from the Odia film Kangula has further cemented her popularity. The song has crossed seven million views, making it one of the most talked-about tracks from the film.

In an exclusive conversation with Odia Celebrity, Payal reflected on her unconventional journey from corporate offices in Hyderabad to the limelight.
“I work in an IT company, and my journey in entertainment began during the COVID-19 lockdown. I got opportunities to feature in advertisements and later in music albums.

One of my biggest breakthroughs came with ‘Lakhe Tankia Hassa’, which became hugely popular among audiences,” she said.

Following the success of the viral music video, Payal went on to feature in several Hindi and Punjabi songs before receiving a call that changed her Odia film career.
“After watching my work, Kangula director Ashwin Tripathy approached me and invited me to be part of the film’s special song ‘Anugul Ra Tukuli’. It was an exciting opportunity that I couldn’t refuse,” she recalled.

Speaking about the shoot, Payal admitted that filming the energetic dance number was far from easy.

“We shot the song in Angul during the peak of winter. It was physically demanding, but the entire team worked hard to make it special. Seeing the overwhelming response from audiences has made every bit of that effort worthwhile,” she said.

Payal believes item songs have become an integral part of commercial cinema, helping films connect with audiences even before their release.

“Today, a catchy promotional song plays a significant role in creating buzz for a film. ‘Anugul Ra Tukuli’ connected instantly with viewers, and the love it has received has been truly overwhelming,” she added.

Despite her growing popularity and a steady stream of offers from filmmakers, Payal remains committed to her corporate career.
“Since I’m still working in the IT sector, I cannot devote enough time to acting, even though I’m receiving many offers from the industry. For now, I’m trying to maintain a balance between both professions,” she said.
Behind her success, Payal credits the unwavering support of her family.

“My father, mother, sister and brother have always encouraged me to pursue my dreams. Their belief in me has given me the confidence to manage both my professional career and my passion for entertainment,” she said.

With viral hits, a successful crossover into films and a growing fan base, Payal Routray is proving that ambition knows no boundaries. Whether in a corporate boardroom or under the bright lights of a film set, she continues to inspire young professionals who dream of pursuing their passion without giving up their careers.
