46th Sarala Puraskar Conferred on Devdas Chhotray

Guru Ramhari Das and Baladev Maharatha Honoured with Ila-Bansidhar Panda Kala Samman

Bhubaneswar: Noted poet and fiction writer Devdas Chhotray was awarded the 46th Sarala Puraskar, instituted by the Indian Metals Public Charitable Trust (IMPaCT), in recognition of his outstanding literary contribution. The award, presented by eminent Hindi poet and writer Prof. Savita Singh, includes a copper plaque, a citation, and a cash prize of Rs. 7 lakh for his acclaimed short-story collection, Matinee Show.

On the same occasion, legendary Odissi musician and vocalist Guru Ramhari Das and celebrated painter Baladev Maharatha were conferred with the ‘Ila-Bansidhar Panda Kala Samman’. Each recipient received a citation, plaque, and a cash prize of Rs. 2.5 lakh.

Presiding over the ceremony, Trustee Mrs. Paramita Panda lauded Chhotray’s unique literary style, noting that his short stories elevate ordinary life experiences to extraordinary heights, blending enjoyment with education. She highlighted the role of Dr. Bansidhar Panda and Ila Panda, who introduced the Sarala Puraskar over four decades ago, in promoting Odia literature and enhancing its stature nationally and internationally.

Chief guest Prof. Savita Singh emphasized the universality of literature, stating that it springs from human desire for happiness and social justice, with love at its core. She praised Chhotray’s contribution, noting that his work enriches not only Odia literature but world literature as well.

Responding to the honor, Devdas Chhotray said, “I do not write for any uninformed audience. I write for myself and a few friends, and to ease the passage of time. I am eternally grateful to the Sarala Puraskar organizers for recognizing Matinee Show.”

The event drew writers, artists, and literature enthusiasts from across Odisha, marking a grand celebration of art and letters.

Founded in 1974, the Indian Metals Public Charitable Trust (IMPaCT) has been a stalwart in promoting Odia literature and arts through initiatives such as the Sarala Puraskar, Ila-Bansidhar Panda Kala Samman, and Ekalabya Puraskar.
