Bhubaneswar: The birth anniversary of Odia film pioneer Mohan Sundar Deb Goswami was recently commemorated at Annapurna Theatre in Puri, in an event organized by the Department of Odia Language, Literature, and Culture, Government of Odisha.
As part of the celebration, the All Odisha Film Directors Association honored his legacy by felicitating his grandson, Bhaktaraj Deb Goswami.
In a significant moment, Bhaktaraj Deb Goswami also unveiled the official logo of the All Odisha Film Directors Association.
The event witnessed the presence of several distinguished members of the association, including Sanjay Nayak, Keshab Mallik, Ranjan Mishra, Dillip Panda, Jyoti Das, Satyanarayan Sahu, and Manas Ranjan Patra, among others.
Mohan Sundar Deb Goswami was an iconic Odissi musician, poet, composer, and film director, widely known for his work in preserving Rahasa or Rasa, a traditional theatrical form depicting the divine romance of Radha and Krishna.
He played a pioneering role in the development of Odia cinema, having directed, produced, and acted in Sita Bibaha (1936)—the first Odia-language film. His timeless renditions of Chhanda, Champu, Kirtana, Bhajana, Janana, and other classical Odissi forms, broadcast over All India Radio and released on His Master’s Voice (HMV) records, made him a household name across Odisha.
