Bhubaneswar: Odia actress Jaya Biswas inaugurated the ‘Silk India’ exhibition-cum-sale at Hotel Prachi here on Friday, showcasing a wide range of traditional silk and cotton handloom products from across the country.

Held under the theme ‘Silk India – Wedding Collection’, the exhibition will remain open to customers from 10:30 am to 8:30 pm until August 24.

The exhibition brings together weavers and artisans from 14 handloom-producing states, offering visitors a diverse collection of traditional Indian textiles ahead of the festive and wedding season. The showcase features exquisite Uppadas, Banarasi silks, Gadwals, Dharmavarams, Jamdanis, Jamawars and Sambalpuris, along with dress materials, fashion jewellery, home furnishings and designer wear.

More than 50,000 products are on display, with artisans and weavers participating from states including Assam, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir and West Bengal.

Speaking about the objective of the exhibition, organiser Manas Acharya said the initiative is aimed at promoting handloom weavers, encouraging artisans and creating better market opportunities for their products.

“The main social objective of the handloom exhibition is to promote weavers, encourage them and provide a market for the handloom industry,” Acharya said, adding that the exhibition seeks to bring pure silk and cotton products directly from weavers to customers without middlemen.

The products are priced between Rs 500 and Rs 1.5 lakh, making the collection suitable for a wide range of customers. Dokra tribal jewellery and Channapatna toys are also among the major attractions at the exhibition.

The event offers visitors an opportunity to experience India’s rich handloom traditions, colours and craftsmanship under one roof, with a special focus on wedding and festive collections.
