Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s cinematic journey is set to cross another significant milestone as Maliput Melodies, the acclaimed Odia feature directed by Vishal Patnaik, is all set to have its first international premiere at the National Indian Film Festival of Australia (NIFFA) on July 5, 2026.
The selection marks another proud moment for Odia cinema, taking the stories, culture and landscapes of the state to an international audience.
Following its successful festival journey in India, the film will now represent Odisha on the global stage, reaffirming the growing recognition of regional cinema beyond national boundaries.
The makers announced the international premiere with the message: “Odisha’s melodies are ready to echo across the world.” The screening at NIFFA is being seen as a celebration of Odia storytelling and the increasing global appeal of authentic regional narratives.
The international premiere comes months after Maliput Melodies created history by becoming the only Odia feature film selected for the Indian Panorama Feature Film section at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), Goa, in 2025. The film enjoyed four screenings during the prestigious festival, drawing appreciation from cinephiles, filmmakers and critics for its sensitive storytelling and striking visual language.
Produced under the banner of Kaustav DreamWorks Studios, Maliput Melodies is an anthology that delicately captures the everyday lives of people in rural Odisha through four interconnected stories. Set against the picturesque backdrop of southern Odisha, the film explores themes of hope, migration, family bonds, tradition and resilience, presenting a deeply rooted yet universally relatable portrait of human emotions.
Director Vishal Patnaik, known for his artistic approach to filmmaking, draws from his roots in Jeypore to create a cinematic experience that celebrates the simplicity and soul of village life. The film’s visual aesthetics and emotionally rich narratives have earned it recognition as one of the most significant contemporary works in Odia cinema.
The film is produced by Kaushik Das, Founder of AAO NXT, Odisha’s first home-grown OTT platform, and head of Kaustav DreamWorks Studios. Through his production house and streaming platform, Das has played a pivotal role in promoting quality Odia content and providing a wider platform for regional filmmakers. Maliput Melodies reflects his vision of taking authentic Odia stories beyond state and national borders.
With its Australian premiere, Maliput Melodies embarks on a new chapter, carrying the fragrance of Odisha’s culture, music and storytelling to global audiences. As the film continues its festival journey, it stands as a testament to the growing confidence and creative excellence of Odia cinema on the international stage.
