CM Calls 10th Film Preservation Workshop a ‘Timely Step’ to Protect Odia Cinema Heritage

Bhubaneswar– Chief Minister Mohan Charn Majhi Wednesday emphasized the importance of film preservation, calling the ongoing 10th Film Preservation and Restoration Workshop-2025 in Bhubaneswar a “timely and crucial step” in safeguarding the cultural heritage of Odia cinema.
Speaking at the inauguration held at Kala Bhoomi, Bhubaneswar, the Chief Minister highlighted that the workshop, organized by the Odisha Government in collaboration with the Film Heritage Foundation and international film preservation bodies, would play a pivotal role in ensuring the legacy of Odia films is passed on to future generations.

“Our Odia cinema is not just a reflection of our cultural identity; it carries with it the memories and stories of our people. By preserving these films, we ensure that our cultural expressions continue to inspire future generations,” said the Chief Minister during the opening ceremony.

The workshop, which will run until the 19th of November, has brought together renowned filmmakers, film archivists, and preservation experts from across the country and around the world. It aims to provide cutting-edge insights into film restoration techniques, helping to rejuvenate and protect the cinematic works of Odisha.
In a significant move, the Chief Minister announced that an official Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed with the Film Heritage Foundation to support the restoration efforts for Odia cinema. He also pledged the government’s full support in bringing back the pride and glory of Odia cinema, ensuring that its rich legacy is restored and cherished.
Notable figures from the Indian film industry, including legendary Hindi actress Waheeda Rehman, attended the inauguration. Waheeda Rehman lauded the efforts of the Odisha Government, while veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan, who joined the event virtually, expressed his admiration for Odisha’s historical contributions to cinema.
During his address, Chief Minister Majhi also extended his gratitude to the Film Heritage Foundation for its involvement in restoring classic Odia films such as Kanaklata (1973) and Maya Miriga (1984), both of which were showcased at the workshop.
“The preservation of our films is not just a technical task, but a cultural responsibility,” the Chief Minister added. “This workshop will not only empower our filmmakers but also provide them with global insights and guidance to take Odia cinema to new heights.”
The inauguration was marked by several other notable speeches, including a special mention of the contributions of filmmakers like Nirad Mahapatra, Ghanasyam Mahapatra, and Manmohan Mahapatra, who have shaped the history of Odia cinema. Actor Amitabh Bachchan, in his message, spoke of Odisha’s longstanding cinema tradition dating back to 1936, starting with Sita Bibaha, and the contributions of Odia filmmakers in enriching Indian cinema.
The Film Heritage Foundation also honored outstanding contributors to the field of cinema preservation. Ravi Bakar was awarded the Outstanding Film Heritage Award, while Sanjay Pattnaik and Surya Deo received the Champion of Film Heritage Award for their exemplary work in the industry.
The workshop is seen as a milestone for the state’s film preservation efforts, with participants eagerly learning from global experts to restore and protect Odia cinematic works for posterity.
