Bhubaneswar: Celebrated Odia music composer Abhijit Majumdar, aged 54, remains in a critical condition at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where he has been receiving intensive medical care for over a month.

Majumdar, who has composed music for several hit Odia films, was admitted to the AIIMS emergency department on September 4 after being found comatose. He was immediately placed on ventilator support and shifted to the Medical ICU for further management.

Doctors have reported that the composer suffers from multiple comorbid conditions including hypertension, hypothyroidism, and chronic liver disease. Upon evaluation, he was diagnosed with Osmotic Demyelination Syndrome (both pontine and extrapontine) — a serious neurological condition — along with bilateral hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP), bloodstream infection caused by multi-drug resistant Acinetobacter, and severe dyselectrolytemia (including low potassium, phosphate, and magnesium levels). He also suffers from vitamin D and folic acid deficiencies.

A percutaneous tracheostomy was performed on September 9 due to prolonged mechanical ventilation. Although his bloodstream infection and pneumonia showed signs of resolution, there was no improvement in his neurological status. A repeat MRI scan on September 18 confirmed that there had been no change in his brain condition.

After partial stabilization, Majumdar was shifted from the Medical ICU to the Medicine Ward (E6 – Isolation Room, Bed No. 29) on September 25 for continued care. However, despite stable renal and liver function, his neurological state remained unchanged, with a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score of E1, VT, M2, indicating a deep coma.

Over the past 24 hours, Majumdar’s condition has deteriorated further, with progressive worsening of neurological functions and a new onset infection, necessitating mechanical ventilation and vasopressor support to maintain his blood pressure. He was readmitted to the Medical ICU on Saturday morning for intensive monitoring and treatment.

Hospital sources have described his condition as extremely critical. The medical team continues to provide round-the-clock care and support as the Odia film fraternity and fans across the state pray for his recovery.

Abhijit Majumdar, the “Melody King” of the Odia music industry and a popular music director in the entertainment world is a household name in Odisha, having composed over 700 songs for blockbuster Odia films like Love Story, Sister Sridevi, Golmaal Love, Sundargarh Ra Salman Khan, and Sriman Surdas. His contribution to both Odia film music and Sambalpuri albums has made him one of the most influential music directors of his generation.
