Bhubaneswar: Renowned Odia music composer, singer and music director Abhijit Majumdar passed away on Sunday at the age of 54 after a prolonged illness. He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where he had been admitted for several months due to liver-related complications.
His demise has cast a pall of gloom over the Odia music and film fraternity.
Abhijit Majumdar had been battling serious health issues for a long time. He was first admitted to a private hospital in Cuttack on August 31 last year after his condition suddenly deteriorated, following which he slipped into a coma.
On September 4, he was shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for advanced treatment. Despite continuous medical care, there was no significant improvement in his condition. Doctors had been trying to gradually wean him off ventilator support. Though rumours of him being declared brain-dead had surfaced earlier, AIIMS had officially denied such claims. However, on Sunday, the tragic news of his passing was confirmed.
His death marks another major loss for the Odia music world, which had recently mourned the demise of popular singer Human Sagar. Fans, colleagues and artists across Odisha expressed deep shock and grief over the untimely loss.
Abhijit Majumdar began his musical journey by composing for audio cassettes before making his mark in Odia cinema. He entered the film industry in 2000 with the movie ‘Kasia Kapila’, which marked the beginning of a successful career spanning over two decades. He went on to compose music for more than 60 Odia films and over 100 music albums, becoming one of the most influential names in the industry.
Some of his most popular songs include “Madhab He Madhab,” “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” “Nachiba Gabbar Singh,” “Balunga Toka,” “Sajani Sajani,” and “Ame Ta Toka Sand Marka.” He was especially known for his chart-topping item numbers that dominated playlists and dance floors for years.
Abhijit also lent his own voice to several songs, notably “Tora Kancha Haladi Dehata Gori Lo.” His song “Rati Sara Bar Light Duku Duku” brought him immense popularity.
In recognition of his contribution to Odia cinema, Abhijit Majumdar was honoured with the Odisha State Film Award for the films ‘Tu Tha Mu Jauchhi Rushi’ (2010) and ‘Trishna’ (2022).
Though Abhijit Majumdar is no more, his voice and music will continue to live on in the hearts of music lovers. As one of his poignant devotional songs metaphorically spoke of seeking rest after life’s struggles, many now remember him as an artist whose “leave” has finally been granted—leaving behind a rich legacy of melodies that will endure for generations.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep sorrow over the demise of Abhijit Majumdar. In a condolence message, the Chief Minister said he was deeply saddened by the passing of the renowned vocalist and music director, terming it an irreparable loss to Odisha’s music, cinema and cultural heritage. He extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed to Lord Shri Jagannath for the eternal peace of the departed soul, saying, “Om Shanti.”
The loss comes close on the heels of another major setback to the Odia music industry, which recently lost popular singer Humane Sagar, leaving the fraternity and fans reeling from successive tragedies.
