Bhubaneswar: The Expressions Bhubaneswar Repertory, in collaboration with the Elite Foundation, staged the historical drama “Dharma Yoddha” at the Bhanja Kala Mandap auditorium, bringing to life the extraordinary legacy of Jayee Rajguru, the revered freedom fighter, priest, and commander of Khordha.

Odisha, the last independent state of India, and Khordha, its final fort, were significant in India’s early resistance against the British. In 1803, the freedom movement in the region was led by Jayee Rajguru — guardian and royal priest of Khordha, and commander-in-chief of the kingdom. A deeply spiritual man, Jayee Rajguru was devoted to Lord Jagannath, and his unwavering faith and strategic brilliance earned him the title of “Dharma Yoddha” (Warrior of Dharma).

The play traces his life, highlighting his devotion, courage, and tactical acumen to protect his land and uphold dharma. While many productions focus on the wars themselves, Dharma Yoddha emphasizes how Jayee Rajguru combined diplomacy and strategy to safeguard his people and the sanctity of Lord Jagannath’s domain.

The production is based on extensive research by renowned Odisha scholars Jatadhari Mishra and Bijay Rath, ensuring historical accuracy while giving the narrative a theatrical form. Twenty artists performed various roles under the direction of Debanand Nayak (Sony), who also conceptualized and scripted the play. Theatre director Mihiri Meher, film producer Pranaya Jethi, actress Meghna Mishra, educationist and mentor Prabhav, and social worker Jasmine Kar of the Elite Foundation were among the notable attendees.

Dev Prasad Das, Secretary of the Department of Culture, graced the occasion as the chief guest. Director Debanand Nayak was felicitated for his efforts in bringing history to the stage.

Through evocative performances and meticulous research, Dharma Yoddha offers audiences a vivid glimpse into the life of Jayee Rajguru, celebrating his role as a spiritual leader, freedom fighter, and defender of Odisha’s heritage.
