Puri : Odisha is set to host the 5th edition of the Mahodadhi Divas (Sea Day) on December 12th, with a spectacular main event planned for the Puri beachfront opposite the Lighthouse. In a historic move, the celebration will extend beyond Puri for the first time, with parallel programs scheduled across 15 districts of the state.
The theme for this year’s festival is “Safeguarding sea for future generation,” underscoring the organizers’ commitment to marine and environmental conservation. The Mahodadhi Divas, an initiative to raise awareness about the ocean’s significance, was officially announced at a press conference held by the organizing committee at Hotel Atithi Heritage on Saturday.
International Honour and Star-Studded Lineup
A major highlight of the event will be the presentation of the prestigious Mahodadhi Samman to Akai Doi of Japan for his contributions.
The December 12th cultural evening promises a grand spectacle, featuring renowned Odia artists and major film promotions. Ollywood playback singer Bishnu Mohan will headline the musical performances, alongside other popular singers like Sagarika Mishra and Miss Saina.
Adding cinematic glamour, the stars of the upcoming Odia films ‘Ladhei,’ directed by Ashok Pati, and ‘Motorcycle,’ by Ashwini Tripathy, will grace the stage with song and dance performances. The film ‘Apeksha’ will also offer a special musical tribute involving lead actors Sarthak and Shubhangi. A unique feature this year will be a captivating fashion show and dance performance by the transgender community.
A Week of Awareness and Arts
To amplify the message of environmental protection, awareness programs are slated for December 10th and 11th in several inland and coastal districts, including Malkangiri, Koraput, Bhadrak, and Cuttack.
The main event on December 12th will kick off with a flag hoisting ceremony, followed by a boat race and the Mahodadhi Art Exhibition showcasing national-level talent.
Artistic activities will include painting and photography competitions, and a live sand art display by world-famous sand artist Manas Kumar Sahu. A state-level poetry session will bring together Odisha’s celebrated poets in the afternoon.
The organizers also used the platform to announce ambitious plans for the future: the 2026 Mahodadhi Divas will be elevated to an international, week-long event, inviting marine athletes and distinguished artists from across the globe.
