Bhubaneswar: A proud moment for Odisha and Odia cinema — acclaimed Odia producer Akshay Kumar Parija once again brings international recognition to the state. His historical film “Papa Buka” has been officially selected for the Red Carpet Gala Premiere at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. The premiere is scheduled for November 22, 2025, marking a significant milestone in Parija’s global cinematic collaborations.
The festival will be held in Goa from November 20 to 28. Out of 270 films shortlisted for the Indian Panorama section, 17 have been officially selected, including three Odia films, making it a matter of pride for Odisha. Earlier, “Papa Buka” had its national premiere in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea (PNG), during the country’s 50th Independence celebrations, attended by Prime Minister James Marape. The film has since had its international premiere in Minsk, adding another remarkable chapter to its inspiring journey.
Shot entirely in Papua New Guinea, the film brings to life the forgotten stories of World War II, binding India and PNG through shared memory and resilience. Directed by Dr. Bijukumar Damodaran, a three-time National Award winner, “Papa Buka” is a poignant anti-war narrative that pays tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and healing of soldiers who gave their lives in battle.
Featuring a powerful performance by 85-year-old tribal leader Sain Boboro, along with Ritabhari Chakraborty, Prakash Bare, and John Saike, the film boasts a rich international ensemble. The soulful score by three-time Grammy Award winner and UN Goodwill Ambassador Ricky Kej adds depth and emotion, delivering a timeless message of culture, peace, and hope to the younger generation.
Producers Noeline Taula Unum, Akshay Kumar Parija, Pa. Ranjith, and Prakash Bare have together crafted a cinematic bridge of friendship between India and PNG. They describe “Papa Buka” as “our story, our history, and our voice on the global stage — a celebration of culture, collaboration, and humanity.”
As Akshay Kumar Parija — also the Chairman of regional OTT platform Kanccha Lankaa — prepares to walk the prestigious red carpet at IFFI, it marks yet another proud moment for Odias on the world entertainment map.
