Bhubaneswar/Mumbai: In a historic leap for Odia cinema, Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions has secured the official remake rights of the Odia blockbuster Bou Buttu Bhuta, marking the first time a leading Bollywood banner has acquired an Odia film for a pan-Indian adaptation.

The deal covers all Indian languages and global markets, paving the way for Odisha’s storytelling to reach audiences across India and beyond. Industry watchers see this as a groundbreaking recognition of Ollywood’s creative strength and cultural resonance.

Bou Buttu Bhuta, directed by Jagdish Mishra and produced by Tripti Satpathy, stars Babushaan Mohanty, Aparajita Mohanty, and Archita Sahu in lead roles. Since its release on June 12, the horror-comedy drama has emerged as the industry’s biggest commercial success, crossing the ₹20 crore mark and completing over 50 triumphant days in theatres — a rare feat in Odia cinema.

Trade analysts believe Dharma’s move not only validates the film’s universal appeal but also opens doors for more regional stories from Odisha to find space on Bollywood’s big canvas. Casting and production details for the remake are expected to be announced soon.
